6 Sustainable Habits You Should Start Practicing in 2022
Another year, another chance to show our care for the planet.
You already know this, but the fashion industry remains to be one of the planet’s pollutants. Every year, we get closer and closer to losing our forest lands and oceans to the fashion industry. Add the bloating landfills of non-recyclable plastics and non-decaying packaging materials to that, and we’re left with massive planet damage we potentially can’t take back if we don’t act now. This 2022, let’s start to live more sustainably for our well-being, our communities, and our home planet. Here are some simple eco-friendly habits you can start practicing today that can impact the environment in big ways.
1. Bring eco-bags when shopping.
Whether you’re going for a quick grocery run or your annual wardrobe update, take an eco-bag with you instead of relying on the usual plastic bags that stores have. It’s one of the simplest things we all can do to reduce our plastic consumption.
2. Reuse parcel pouches, bubble wraps, and mailer boxes.
Online shopping boomed during quarantine, which means parcel plastics and wastes doubled. To some, maybe it even tripled. Carefully unbox your shopping hauls so you can still reuse their packaging. There are also organizations that receive plastic bags, pouches, mailers, and bubble wraps for recycling. Some of them even pick them up for free.
3. Go paperless as much as you can.
The pandemic fast-tracked global adoption to paperless transactions. Filling up forms, paying for your purchases, getting bills and receipts, sending and signing important documents—these are just some of the things that we can now conveniently do online instead of piling up papers that go straight to trash.
4. Actively participate in Earth Hour and environmental events.
Living sustainably doesn’t only mean reducing tangible waste. It’s also about preserving water and electricity resources. By being intentional in our actions and participating in events that benefit the environment, we advocate for our planet and encourage others to do the same. Some important dates to remember in 2022 include March 26 for Earth Hour, April 22 for Earth Day, and June 5 for World Environment Day.
5. Walk or bike instead of using cars for short-distance trips.
By taking a walk or cycling to go from one place to another, you help reduce carbon emissions. Switching to these modes of transportation does not only make a positive difference to the environment; it also makes you enjoy a more active and healthier lifestyle.
6. Support sustainable brands and buy eco-friendly products.
Be more mindful in your shopping habits and start supporting brands that do their part in caring for the environment, too. Choose footwear that is durable, stylish, and is made out of resources that are harmless to the planet. You can find such eco-friendly products at Res|Toe|Run with their Greens Selection.
